Long carpets, stunning backdrops, carefully designed handouts, and delectable catering are just some of the details that make MICE events memorable. Every element is carefully planned to create an experience that engages attendees from the moment they arrive until the event ends.
From physical installations to audio visual experiences, every detail contributes to the overall experience and outcome. But once the lights are turned off and attendees head home, what happens to all these event assets?
Across two major industry stages in Thailand, Thailand MICE X-Change and GSTC2026 in Phuket, one message stood out clearly. Sustainable event practices create better events when sustainability is integrated into the process from the very beginning.
On Stage at Thailand’s Biggest MICE Event
During Thailand’s biggest MICE event, Adam Piperdy, Founder and CEO of UPGroup Asia, Asia’s strategic event experience partner, emphasised that the most sustainable production decisions are often the better production decisions. However, many teams continue to make these decisions too late in the process.

The footprint is set at the brief
Format, location, and travel lock in most of your carbon footprint before a single supplier is briefed.
Sustainable is better production
LED over scenic. Modular staging. Digital over print. Lower impact, and usually better value.
Your clients are asking for sustainability
Sustainability is in RFPs. Suppliers without documented metrics are cut before the first call.
Measure, report, improve
Measure it. Report it. Improve it. What gets measured gets managed.
The GSTC MICE Standard, In Practice
A week before, Adam joined a panel at GSTC2026 in Phuket alongside leaders from TCEB, Singapore EXPO, and Accessible Travel Solutions. In a room of 500+ delegates from 55 countries, the discussion focused on the newly launched GSTC MICE Standard and what implementation looks like in live event environments.

Creativity is the real sustainability tool, not cost-cutting
Removing carpets from a 4,000 sqm exhibition hall saved one client $30,000. Nobody noticed. That money went into actual innovation. Sustainable events do not mean cheap events.
Accessibility starts at the brief
Two text boxes asking about allergies and access needs is not an accessibility strategy. By that point, venues are locked. Mobility, sensory design, and neurodivergent considerations need to be in the brief from day one.
The standard creates a shared language across stakeholders
The GSTC MICE Standard gives venues, organisers, and suppliers a common framework to work from. That alignment matters more than trying to solve every criterion at once.
Start where it matters most
The GSTC MICE Standard covers 28 to 30 criteria across three tracks. You do not have to start everywhere. Start where your client already has a mandate.
Sustainability as a Decision
Across both stages, a message on sustainability became clear. Sustainable practices should be integrated throughout every stage of the event process. However, embedding sustainability as early as the planning stage sets the foundation for a more sustainable event outcome.
Sustainability in events is a production decision, not simply a values statement. It is not separate from creativity, production, or even client expectations. Instead, it is increasingly becoming part of them.
